This is the quotation:

"Outside of a dog, a book is a man's best friend.
And inside of a dog, it's too dark to read."

-- Groucho Marx

Groucho Marx was a comedian. The saying is meant to be funny.

It is a play on the different meanings in English for inside and outside.

"Outside of" can mean "other than" or "besides" or "apart from" or "aside from" or "beyond."

Inside of is used to mean "within" or "internal to" but can have other meanings as well such as the other meanings of "within" relating to elapsed time (within 5 minutes = inside of 5 minutes)

So, he was saying:

A dog is man's best friend (a common saying)
Books are man's second best friend (second to a dog)
If you are on the interior of a dog it is too dark to read a book.

Hope that helps.

Bill Austin
