On the "a chip on the shoulder" quote you asked about, here's some feedback.
While it isn't very nice, my take on it is that they're saying someone has a
block of wood for a head - i.e., "You blockhead," as Lucy screams at Charlie
Brown! The head is the next thing up from the shoulder, right? Anyone else
have any thoughts??? I imagine there are several ways of interpreting this
and will be curious to see what others come up with. In any event, a chip on
the shoulder is a heavy burden and stops a person from moving on and being
positive!
