famous quotes 9/11 Quotes (reprise)
Here we are: 9/11/04. Can it be that terror is now an accepted part of
our lives?
"We will not walk in fear, one of another. We will not be driven by fear
into an age of unreason, if we dig deep into our history and our
doctrine, and remember that we are not descended from fearful men ...
"We can deny our heritage and our history, but we cannot escape
responsibility for the result. There is no way for a citizen of a
republic to abdicate his responsibility. As a nation, we have come into
our full inheritance at a tender age. We proclaim ourselves, as indeed
we are, the defenders of freedom wherever it continues to exist in the
world.
"We cannot defend freedom abroad by deserting it at home. The actions of
the [government official] have caused alarm and dismay amongst our
allies abroad and given considerable comfort to our enemies. And whose
fault is that? Not really his. He didn't create this situation of fear,
he merely exploited it successfully. Cassius was right: 'The fault, dear
Brutus, is not in our stars, but in ourselves.'"/
/--Edward R. Murrow, /See It Now/, March 9, 1954.
//What's below, along with a few other posts I'm sending today, I posted
at this time last year. Americans generally revere the Declaration of
Independence and the Constitution--but all too often, we don't read
them, and we don't appreciate their significance. I urge the Americans
on the list to do so today--and I urge everyone else on the list to do
likewise, and especially to read the Declaration; its principles, though
drawn from a distinctively Anglo-American tradition, are universally
applicable. In this era, as often before, we face a struggle between
"Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness" and universal slavery and
submission. The enemies of liberty are both foreign and domestic, and
with bullets abroad and ballots at home, they must be destroyed.

The two quotes I used most in the fall of 2001 were:
"Mr. Ward, what is it that the foulest bastards on earth denounce us for,
among other things? Oh yes, for our motto of 'Business as usual.' Well--
business as usual, Mr. Ward!"
-- Ayn Rand, Atlas Shrugged
"When the first breath of winter through the flowers is icing
And you look to the north and a pale moon is rising
And it seems like all is dying and will leave the world to mourn
In the distance, hear the laughter of the last unicorn:
I'M ALIVE! I'M ALIVE!"
--"America," The Last Unicorn
One I've used a lot since is from a patriotic standard, but verses not so
often heard:
"America, America, God mend thine every flaw
Confirm thy soul in self-control, thy liberty in law
O beautiful, for patriot dream that sees beyond the years
Thine alabaster cities gleam, undimmed by human tears."
--America the Beautiful.
If you want something to reflect on relating to American patriotism, there
is--this ought to go without saying, but probably doesn't--little that's
better than the Declaration of Independence. I'm sending it--plus the
Constitution and lyrics of some relevant songs (The Star-Spangled Banner;
New York, New York (Start Spreading the News); Anthem (from "Chess");
America (My Country 'Tis of Thee); America the Beautiful)--to the group, as
I did about this time last year.
