Quick Cabbage Soup

1 lb. ground sirloin
2 T. oil
2 cans (16 oz each) stewed tomatoes
10.5 oz. can beef broth
2 cups water
1 t. lemon juice
1 t. Worcestershire sauce
1 head cabbage, chopped
Salt and pepper to taste

In a large skillet, brown sirloin in oil; drain. In a large pot, place
sirloin, tomatoes, broth, water, lemon juice and Worcestershire sauce. Bring
to a boil and simmer for 30 minutes. Place cabbage in pot and simmer for one
hour. Salt and pepper to taste. Makes 6 to 8 servings.

Fettuccine

Cook fettuccine as package directs, drain.

Apple Lady Scones

Servings: 6

Ingredients:
2 cups sifted unbleached all-purpose flour
1 tbsp. baking powder
1 tbsp. granulated sugar
1/3 cup shortening
1 apple, peeled, cored and grated
3/4 cup buttermilk
Cinnamon and sugar mixture (2 tbsp. sugar and 1 tsp. cinnamon mixed
together)
Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Have an ungreased baking sheet ready.

In mixing bowl combine flour, baking powder and sugar. Cut in
shortening. Stir in grated apple. Add buttermilk, mix until soft
dough forms.

Turn dough out onto floured board. Pat into a 6-inch to 7-inch round
disk, sprinkle top with cinnamon and sugar mixture, cut into
triangular or round shapes. Place on ungreased baking sheet and bake
for 20 minutes or until nicely browned. Enjoy with apple jelly or
pear jam.

Makes 6 scones.

Chocolate Chip Rum Raisin Scones
Makes 8 jumbo, or 12 regular sized scones

3 cups all-purpose flour
3 large eggs
1 tbsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. vanilla extract
2 tbsp. white rum, or rum extract
1/3 cup buttermilk or plain yogurt
8 ounces (2 sticks) unsalted butter at room temperature,
cut into pieces
1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
1/2 cup raisins
1/4 cup + 2 tbsp. granulated sugar

In a large bowl, mix flour, baking powder and salt, and set aside.
Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper.

With an electric mixer on medium-low speed, beat butter until
creamy. Add sugar and beat 3 to 5 minutes until pale and fluffy. Add
eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Scrape down
sides of bowl and reduce speed to low. Add flour mixture-mix only
until blended. Scrape down sides of bowl again. Add buttermilk or
cream ( or yogurt, if using) and mix only until blended. Add vanilla
and rum, and stir in chocolate chips. Fold in raisins.

Using ice cream scoop, scoop 1/3 cupfuls of dough onto parchment
lined cookie sheet 2 inches apart. Bake 12 minutes at 350 degrees F
(180 C) then reduce to 325 degrees F (160 C) and bake 10-13 minutes
longer. Watch them closely, you only want them a pale color.

News & Notes with Ed Gordon, May 9, 2005 · "Become a Millionaire in a Weekend" was the theme of a real estate expo that drew 10,000 people to the Los Angeles Convention Center over the weekend. But some real estate experts warn that the current market may be a high-priced "bubble" about to burst, similar to the dot-com collapse. AFI distributed a ballot with the names of 400 nominated movie quotes to a jury of over 1,500 leaders in the creative community, including film artists (directors, screenwriters, actors, editors, cinematographers), critics and historians.

The jurors were asked to consider the following criteria in making their selections:

MOVIE QUOTE: A statement, phrase or brief exchange of dialogue spoken in an American Film. (Lyrics from songs are not eligible.)

CULTURAL IMPACT: Movie quotes that viewers use in their own lives and situations, thus circulating through popular culture and becoming part of the national lexicon.

LEGACY: Movie quotes that viewers use to evoke the memory of a treasured film, thus ensuring and enlivening its historical legacy.

*AFI defines an American film as an English language motion picture with significant creative and/or financial production elements from the United States. Additionally, only movie quotes from feature-length American films released before January 1, 2004 were considered. AFI defines a feature-length film as a motion picture of narrative format that is typically over 60 minutes in length.

The Criteria
AFI distributed a ballot with the names of 400 nominated movie quotes to a jury of over 1,500 leaders in the creative community, including film artists (directors, screenwriters, actors, editors, cinematographers), critics and historians.

The jurors were asked to consider the following criteria in making their selections:

MOVIE QUOTE: A statement, phrase or brief exchange of dialogue spoken in an American Film. (Lyrics from songs are not eligible.)

CULTURAL IMPACT: Movie quotes that viewers use in their own lives and situations, thus circulating through popular culture and becoming part of the national lexicon.

LEGACY: Movie quotes that viewers use to evoke the memory of a treasured film, thus ensuring and enlivening its historical legacy.

*AFI defines an American film as an English language motion picture with significant creative and/or financial production elements from the United States. Additionally, only movie quotes from feature-length American films released before January 1, 2004 were considered. AFI defines a feature-length film as a motion picture of narrative format that is typically over 60 minutes in length.
